Latter Years of the Colonial Met Service
The Colonial Meteorological Service in its Mature Years
This period spans 1882 to Todd's retirement in 1905. The starting point was the issue of the first recorded continental synoptic cart in 1881 and included the refinement of synpotic charts for daily publication at the GPO, followed by the development of the first public next day forecast in November 1888 and finally marked by increasing regionalisation of activities as ferderalisation of meteorological servces were completed in June 1909. Also, between 1882 and 1893 three Cololonial Meteorological Conferences were held that set the procedures, routines and context for a national approach to recording weather data and events across the whole of Australia and New Zealand.
