Specialist work of writing on a single subject or an aspect of a subject, usually by a single author. Unlike a textbook, which surveys the state of knowledge in a field, the main purpose of a monograph is to present primary research and original scholarship. Summary:
BRENTWOOD MAILS.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir—Can you tell me why the inhabitants of Brentwood, while living within fifty miles of Adelaide, are
not allowed to get their Friday's papers and letters until midday on Monday, while people living five
times the distance are able to get them on Saturday ? It seems like adding insult to injury to the
people of Minlacowie, after having enjoyed a Saturday's mail for the last four years, now to be packed
off till Monday. In these enlightened days we expect to advance, not recede. It is now Saturday night,
and I have no paper. In conclusion, I will say that in my opinion the whole of Southern Yorke's
Peninsula mails could be delivered at more convenient times with half the present expense, just by a
little judicious management; and if Mr. Todd can't do it, he should retire in favour of some one that
can.
I am, Sir, &c.,
WM. KENDELL. Brentwood. Saturday night. 17th.
[We understand from the Postmaster-General that the existing contract expires at the end of March
next, after which it is intended that the mails shall be delivered at Brentwood on Saturdays. We have
taken the liberty of striking out from the letter a few words which would cause pain to a deserving
officer, without in any way serving the cause of the writer. -Ed.]

Synopsis: Expansion of telephone lauded, beyond private merchant based networks to public ones,
potentially as a replacement of the telegraph
Summary: Need for public telephone network
<clip> We are glad to hear that Mr, Todd, the Superintendent of Telegraphs, has it in contemplation
to introduce the telephone into practical use in Adelaide. Some of our merchants have short lines laid
down to connect their offices with other branches of their business, and they speak in the highest
terms of the advantage the invention has been to them. It saves both time and labour, and thus pays
for itself over and over again. In England and in America it is freely used as an adjunct to the
telegraph, and it is even being preferred to the latter marvellous discovery. <clip.
<clip> In Adelaide there are peculiar facilities for the adoption of the new method of instantaneous
communication, as the telegraph lines are in the hands of the Government, and we may hope soon to
see the telephone in extensive operation here, for there can be no doubt as to the many private and
public uses to which it can be applied. <clip>

Synopsis: Todd criticised for comments not supporting "better passenger conveyances" in the

Summary:
RIVER DISTRICT NEWS.
Our correspondent at Wilcannia, writing on November 11, says:—
Mr. Newland's letter re F. Crews & Co.'s Barrier mail service, which appeared in the last issue of the
Observer, has been carefully read and commented on by many in this town ship, and all agree that
Mr. Newland is entitled to the warmest thanks of all residents in the district for his persistent and
successful efforts to establish this line, and were a little more attention paid to his remarks by the "
Powers that be," your Postmaster-General would not make such an assertion," That he did not feel
warranted in recommending the expenditure of a few additional hundreds to secure better passenger
conveyances," on what must eventually become the highway of communication between Adelaide
and the Riverina District. Mr. Todd can form but a poor idea of the importance of this and other rising
townships on the Darling. Let him visit us, or consult such authorities as Messrs. Goyder, Newland,
Hogarth, or Peter Waite, and he will not, I venture to say, make such an assertion again. I often hear
comparison drawn between the coaches on the Deniliquin and Bourke roads and the buggy used
between Wilcannia and the Barrier, certainly not complimentary to the latter, some times with, the
remark, What can you expect "from a one-horse colony ?"

Synopsis: Report sent to Todd on quality assessment of wool
Summary: Presented at Committee of the Chamber of Manufactures on wool from interior of
Australia
RURAL NOTES AND COMMENTS.
<clip> At a meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Manufactures, held on Monday, January 10,
the Secretary read the following report, which had been made by Mr. Peacock, M.P., upon the wool
from the interior of Australia, which had been forwarded by Mr. Todd, C.M.G.:—" All the samples well
maintain the Merino type, but the wool is somewhat short and harsh through inexperienced scouring.
No. 1 and No. 3 samples are both superior to No. 2. I value Nos. 1 and 3 at about 4d.. per lb. less
than my ordinary scoured Merino combing, but portion of this difference is attributable to the method
of preparation. Remembering the samples of wool in grease from the same place which were
submitted to me last year, I am pleased to see that the "fuzzy" tip does not extend very low in the
staple.".<clip>

Synopsis: Comment on absenteeism of “the clerk of the weather”
Summary:
ECHOES AND RE-ECHOES.
<clip> The location, if not the identity, of that much-abused and oft-quoted personage, the clerk of the
weather, has been discovered at last. He exists in Mr. Todd's office, and his hours are the usual
Government hours, which accounts for the vagaries in the weather during the night. Moreover, he
gets a holiday occasionally which also accounts for the way the weather gets adrift. A note was sent
from one of the newspaper offices to Mr. Todd's office, for information concerning the rainfall, and the
reply was that—" The clerk who keeps the record is absent on leave." That accounts for the sudden
and ill-regulated change in the weather we have had lately. <clip>
